Amphora Company

In 1994 I left Kodak to pursue my entrepreneurial dream. I put my home up for sale, took out a second mortgage, and convinced two partners to move from New York to Seattle. With a "nose", a packaging designer and myself, we trademarked the brand, developed aromatherapy products in the basement, and opened the first store in downtown Seattle. Featuring AMPHORA™ brand body care products with free custom scenting with 265 essential and perfume oils, the company established a reputation for having the finest selection anywhere.

Store number one was located on the retail level of a downtown Seattle office building (left). Each store featured a scent bar for customers to sample.

Amphora offered aromatherapy, herbal, homeopathic and other self-health products marketed in a simple, elegant and ecologically responsible manner.

After one year of operation, General Nutrition Companies (GNC) invested in Amphora, and we expanded to nine stores in Washington and California within a year.

We introduced an oil dispenser for the 18 most popular oils (left).

I developed the company's first e-commerce Web site in 1995, in time for Holiday sales.

Personal care products were custom scented for customers at no extra charge. Recipes were filed for each customer.
